Green Lantern: First Flight - A Review
Green Lantern: First Flight is a 2009 animated film that tells the origin story of Hal Jordan, the first human to join the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps. The film is directed by Lauren Montgomery, written by Alan Burnett, and produced by Bruce Timm, who are veterans of DC Comics animation. The film features the voice talents of Christopher Meloni as Hal Jordan, Victor Garber as Sinestro, Tricia Helfer as Boodikka, Michael Madsen as Kilowog, and John Larroquette as Tomar-Re.
The film follows Hal Jordan as he receives a mysterious green ring from a dying alien named Abin Sur, who tells him to take his place in the Green Lantern Corps. Hal is taken to the planet Oa, where he meets the Guardians of the Universe, the ancient beings who created the green power battery and the Green Lantern Corps. He is assigned to train under Sinestro, the most respected and feared Green Lantern in the Corps. However, Hal soon discovers that Sinestro has a secret agenda: he has been working with a criminal named Kanjar Ro to obtain the yellow element, a powerful source of energy that can counteract the green power. Sinestro plans to use the yellow element to create a new weapon and overthrow the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps.

Hal must prove his worth as a Green Lantern and stop Sinestro's scheme before it is too late. Along the way, he faces many dangers and challenges, such as fighting against Kanjar Ro's army, surviving a trial by fire from Kilowog, befriending Tomar-Re and Boodikka, and learning to master his ring's abilities. He also develops a romantic interest in Carol Ferris, his co-worker at Ferris Aircraft.
The film is a fast-paced and action-packed adventure that explores the mythology and lore of the Green Lantern universe. The animation is crisp and colorful, with detailed backgrounds and fluid movements. The voice acting is superb, with Meloni capturing Hal's courage and humor, Garber portraying Sinestro's charisma and menace, and Helfer adding depth and emotion to Boodikka. The music by Robert Kral is epic and fitting for the cosmic scale of the story.
The film is not without its flaws, however. Some fans may find the film too short and rushed, as it covers a lot of ground in only 77 minutes. Some characters are underdeveloped or underused, such as Carol Ferris, who only appears briefly in the beginning and end of the film. Some plot points are also left unresolved or unexplained, such as how Sinestro obtained the yellow element in the first place, or what happened to Boodikka after she betrayed Hal.
Overall, Green Lantern: First Flight is a solid and enjoyable introduction to the Green Lantern franchise. It offers a thrilling and engaging story that showcases Hal Jordan's journey from an ordinary pilot to a heroic space cop. It also sets up the potential for more stories and sequels in the future. Fans of Green Lantern and DC Comics animation will not be disappointed by this film.
